Spies of Mississippi.....What Do You Think?

Image result for spies of mississippi book

The purpose of the all-school-read in Exploratory is to build students' literacy skills. As we read the book Spies of Mississippi during class, you will build these skills by keeping a reading journal. In these journal pages, you will be drawing conclusions based on what you have read and any other knowledge or experiences that you have. You are learning to take what you know and what you have learned and put it together into a conclusion about what you are reading.

During this last part of the semester, our theme will be "respect." With each reading, you will be asked to draw conclusions about how respect and trust play a role in what you have read.

You are also to comment on what the current passage made you think about in general.  (How did it make you feel?  What images did it bring to your mind?  Do you think this could be possible in today's society?)

To receive credit for participating in this activity you must;
1. Post your own thoughts and ideas
2. Comment on one of your peer's thoughts and ideas

Here are the Rules on how to write your own comment and how to respond to others:
1. If you have something nice to say, say it and give specifics.
2. If you have a criticism or disagreement, say it nicely. (we don't have to agree on everything but we do have to be civil)
3. End your comment with a relevant question.  That way an interesting conversation may begin to flow.

Group 1: Scientific findings.
Task: Research the number of genes discovered and their sequence, as well as definitions of key scientific terms such as chromosome , DNA , gene , and protein

Helpful Websites-Group 1: Scientific findings
Human Genome Project 5-Year Plan
Twenty Questions About DNA Sequencing
Human Genome Project Science

Completed Project Display:
The scientific findings display should include a labeled diagram showing the relationships among DNA, genes, chromosomes, and proteins; at least 20 detailed questions you have come up with as a group based on your research.

Reflect and answer:
Each person in the group will randomly draw a question that they must reflect and answer.  Typed in 12pt Arial font and added to the group project with question, answer, and name.

Group 2: Potential applications.
Task: Research the tools used to detect genes carrying disease and how this information can be applied to individual treatment plans

Helpful Websites- Group 2: Potential applications
The Human Genome Project: From Maps to Medicine
From the Genome to the Proteome

Completed Project Display:
The potential applications display should present a case study showing how the genes responsible for an illness were identified and how that information was used to develop treatment; at least 20 detailed questions you have come up with as a group based on your research

Reflect and answer:
Each person in the group will randomly draw a question that they must reflect and answer.  Typed in 12pt Arial font and added to the group project with question, answer, and name.
